Pettine combs are made of ancient woods and need to be handled / used with care and intention, they are not to be forced or stressed.
The combs are used for holding up / styling the hair. Use by twisting the hair into a bun then with the comb take just a bit of the hair, sliding the comb along the back of the head to be fixed standing up.
Find an interesting piece of wood, current pieces are all made from salvaged wood found in southern india. The pieces range from wood from trees only found and used in that region to ancient rosewood pillars already 100 years old.
Find what shape will come from such a piece and extract the form.
Refine and work the shape, this is sawing, shaving and carving with the knife and hand saw then sanding and smoothing/feeling every bit of the piece until she arrives.
Treating the piece. This is done with moi ruki cream made of herbs, oil and beeswax as well as using tung seed oil.
Time. a piece is worn, touched, rubbed and married with one’s routine, rhythm and body. The good place.
Pettine HAIR combs are handmade in Paris using salvaged & sustainable woods. Each batch takes with it the origin story of shapes explored and the woods used (that being from 19th century furniture to wood from fallen trees on a friend’s property).
The wood from this batch of combs was found in India and France. The shapes are inspired from a trip in Napoli where we spent time deeply exploring and feeling Pompeii ruins.
We make in collaboration with Beatrice Bonino several main forms; Melusine, la Reine, Block, Pulpo, Lune & Sirena. The shapes are inspired from trips to ancient cities like Pompeii and Tbilisi, a moment in a funny house in Montreuil and simply the moon of the Indian sky.
7 main shapes: La Lune, Pulpo, Melusine, Block, La Reine, Colour of, Sirena
